RBSEF Required Forms
1. Forms for Grades 6-8
- All students complete Form 1: Checklist for Adult Sponsor
- All students complete Form 1B: Approval Form
- If you do not need to check items in number 4 (projects dealing with vertebrate animals, some human experiments, fungi, microbes, recombinant DNA and tissue cultures) of Form 1, you are finished.
- If you do need to check any items in 4 on Form 1 you need to follow the Grade 9-12 form requirements.
2. Forms for Grades 9-12
- All students complete Form 1: Checklist for Adult Sponsor
- All students complete Form 1A: Student Checklist (numbers 10 Research Plan and 11 Abstract are optional and not required for this fair, use of estimated dates is ok)
- All students complete Form 1B: Approval Form
- If you need to check any items in 4 on Form 1, (projects dealing with vertebrate animals, some human experiments, fungi, microbes, recombinant DNA and tissue cultures) additional forms may be required.
- Use the ISEF Rules Wizard to help you determine which forms to use.
- The first step of registration is the online form at www.rbsef.org
- Complete, submit and print out for required signatures.
- Other required forms can be found at the ISEF Document Library
- Forms can filled out online and then printed out or printed blank to fill in by hand.
- Completing the required Form 1: Checklist For Adult Sponsor/Safety Assessment will alert the sponsoring adult (parent/teacher/advisor) to the possible need to complete additional forms.
- Most experiments involving NON-HUMAN VERTEBRATE LIFE, ANY BACTERIA, FUNGI, RECOMBINANT DNA, DANGEROUS CHEMICALS will require additional forms.
- Use the ISEF Rules Wizard for additional help. Other than the online registration, RBSEF uses the same forms as ISEF.
- SRC means Scientific Review Committee
- Some projects involving HUMAN SUBJECTS may need prior approval. Search “Human Subjects Risk Assessment Guide” for a Risk Assessment by a school’s IRB committee. This risk assessment will indicate if there is a need for SRC approval by the fair.
- IRB stands for INSTITUTIONAL REVIEW BOARD.
- It is composed of 3 members of the school building or a district group that must include a science teacher, an administrator, and one of the following (medical doctor, psychologist, psychiatrist, registered nurse, or doctor asst.).
- The IRB can determine if any questionable projects may need prior approval by the science fair’s SRC (Scientific Review Committee). To avoid problems it is best to have ALL projects involving humans, animals, bacteria, fungi and dangerous substance reviewed by the IRB before allowing students to start or enter that project in the fair.
- Most projects can be cleared by the local IRB.
- After all required forms are completed and signed, the student or adult sponsor must submit the forms for review. The SRC will monitor this SRC REVIEW form [here] and contact the student/sponsor with the next steps. Send an email to src@rbsef.com if you have questions or concerns.
- NOTE: not getting prior approval may result in not being allowed in the fair.
- NO, only some projects may need prior approval.
- A local school’s IRB can determine if there is a need for prior SRC approval. Most projects can be approved by the school’s IRB.
- Junior Division (gr. 6-8), Natural Science or Physical Science
- Senior Division (gr. 9-12), Botany, Chemistry, Earth and Space, Engineering, Math and Computer, Medicine and Health, Physics, Zoology

- Early registration fee of $15 per student.
- Registration fee of $20 per student after the early registration deadline.
- No, no team projects are permitted in the fair.
- StemWizard is an electronic option to upload all forms and make payments for registration.

- All forms and fees are due in to RBSEF by the first Friday in March.

- Yes, PJAS science competitions are not affiliated with ISEF, so your project is eligible to compete at RBSEF the same year you present it at PJAS.

Unclaimed Award Policies
RBSEF Uncashed Award Check Policy
While it is the intention of RBSEF to ensure that 100% of designated award funds be enjoyed by the students who have earned them, we also recognize that students bear the responsibility to cash their checks or communicate with RBSEF if a check has been lost.
Policy:
All designated special award funds will be disbursed on the evening of the RBSEF award ceremony.
Three months from the date of issue, RBSEF will email any students who have not cashed their checks to encourage them to cash the check and inform them that the check will not be negotiable more than six months from the date of issue.
Six months from the date of issue RBSEF will void any uncashed checks and return the unclaimed funds to the general fund.
